How to change the default still image resolution of Logitech UVC webcams

Shows how to use the Logitech Webcam Default Resolution Changer (DefResCh) tool to change the default still resolution.

Purpose

This document explains how to use the Logitech Webcam Default Resolution Changer (or simply DefResCh) tool to change the default still resolution the Logitech driver exposes to applications.

Prerequisities

You need a Logitech UVC camera running on Windows XP or Vista to follow this how-to. The Logitech UVC driver which comes with the product is required.

The tool has been tested on Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1 Logitech driver version 11.80, but should work on previous versions as well.

The .NET framework 2.0 is required.

Background

Some applications do not allow the user to choose the resolution for still image capture. These applications use the default still resolution of the webcam. The DefResCh tool can change the default still resolution of the webcam, thereby enabling a user to change the still image capture resolution of any application.

For example, in Windows XP, there is a WIA driver able to capture still images from a webcam. Changing the default still resolution through this tool will in effect, enable a user to select a resolution for image capture under WIA.

The DefResCh tool

When you start the DefResCh tool, you will be presented a screen similar to the following:

DefResCh Screenshot

The Device combo box allows a user to select the webcam for which they would like to modify the default still resolution. There may be one or more webcams detected, so a user is able to select the correct one here.

The Default Still Resolution combo box displays all supported still resolutions for the webcam. By changing the selected resolution, a user is able to change default still resolution for the selected device.

The Save button saves the new default still resolution to the registry. A backup of the registry key is created in the tool’s directory before saving, so to return back to the previous setting, double click this registry file.

The Cancel button exits the application without saving any changes.

Usage

  1. Select the device whose default still resolution you wish to change.
  2. Select the new default still resolution that you want.
  3. Click Save, and then plug/replug your camera in.
If your changes don't take effect after plugging your camera in you may have to restart your computer.

Notes

  • The registry key modified by the DefResCh tool is not editable by users. Editing this registry key may prevent the Logitech UVC driver for the webcam from loading, requiring a reinstall of the driver.
  • The DefResCh tool does not allow you to change the default streaming resolution (i.e. the default video resolution that is used in application such as AMCap). It only changes the default still resolution.
